I hope to experience the type of love that Randy Travis
describes when he sings “my love is deeper than the hollow, stronger than the
river, higher than the pine trees…purer than the snowflakes.” Although this
song is a bit cheesy and hopelessly romantic, it describes my ideal
relationship. I am a totally sappy, romantic girl. However, popular music today
has taken the idea of idealistic true love and “soul mates” to an extreme.
Partners are expected to be perfect for each other, as Bruno Mars says “When I see
your face, there’s not a thing that I would change, ‘cuz girl your amazing,
just the way you are.” Although I want to believe in true love and soul mates,
I do not think that real soul mates are as lovey-dovey as they are described in
pop culture. True soul mates accept each other for the way they are, flaws and
all, and they work through the good times and the bad. Billy Joel demonstrates
this kind of love when he sings,” I don't want clever conversation, I
never want to work that hard, I just want someone that I can talk to, I want
you just the way you are.”
Instead of being the
super perfect girl who has “that one thing” (One direction) I want to be
treated like a real person. Hopefully my
future relationships will be less like One Direction songs and more like Bruce
Springsteen songs where the girl is called “you ain’t a beauty but hey, you’re all
right.”
